Therefore, this highly symbolic date for world literature, was chosen by the General Conference of UNESCO in order to pay homage to the book and the authors, and encourage everyone, especially younger, discover the pleasure of reading and respect the contribution of creators to social progress and cultural development.

The idea of this celebration finds his origin in Catalonia (Spain) where it is traditional to offer a rose for the purchase of a book. The day of this festival, the Catalans traditionally offer a book and a rose to the loved person. They combine the sense of love, the beauty of the flower, the love of literary creation.

The success of this initiative depends primarily on the support can be provide by the interested parties - authors, editors, booksellers, teachers and librarians, educators, deprived public institutions and, non-governmental organizations and media, which are mobilized in each country via the National Commissions for UNESCO, associations, Centers and clubs UNESCO, the networks of schools and associated libraries and all those which feel motivated in take part in this worldwide festival.
