Exile ...at Paris
In exile in Paris,
Sorbonne - march11. 2011
Paris is often percieved to be a friendly city for artists and writers from around the world. So much so that they adopted it this destination as a kind of literary cosmopolitan homeland. Yet in the past, many French writers and artists who settled temporarily or permanently in Paris centered on the City of Lights took on a different view. They came from Quebec, Switzerland, the Caribbean, Africa or elsewhere. Paris often generated in them a paradoxical feeling of exile more acute than that is felt by immigrants who do not speak the French language.
Hence a series of questions:
*The French American, European and African are they more likely to live in "exile" in Paris? What are effects of sharing a common language - but with many differing accents?
*Are French writers best placed to reveal the cultual exclusivity of the City of Light?
*What symbolic power struggles underlie the willingness of writers to be recognized in Paris?
*Is there a distrust of Parisian literary writers to amongst French from other parts of the world?
*What Paris has been imagined when compared with reality of living the French way?
